WHO ARE YOU?
This week I had the privilege to listen to some amazing career coaches. And I have to say, at the ripe age of 33, I had more AHA moments than I would normally care to disclose. I mean, a sister was going like: “Ooh Ahh!” like I just discovered the quantum equation. Not that any of what was being said was revolutionary or absolutely mind-boggling, it is just that I, along with everyone in the room, needed to hear IT! Again, and again, and again, and as frequently as possible so the reality of the embedded message would not only stick to the surface of our beings, but permeate us as individuals in all areas of our lives…
The question is amongst the most basic ones: “WHO ARE YOU?” Yes, you over there, the fashionista with your $29.99 TJ Maxx shoes that look like a million bucks, and you the mother of 2 who can still rock a halfway decent outfit, and you the office nerd with the big glasses who can navigate an Excel spreadsheet like the palm of your hands…WHO ARE YOU?
What defines you, what differentiates you? What makes you so special (or not)? It does not matter what others answer to this question for you, this is one of those jackpot cases when only you can answer the question for yourself.
Well, how interesting that ” Miss-loud-mouth, strut-my-stuff, check-out-my-shoes, ex-teacher’s-pet” over here came up with nothing else than a giant fog of fumbled thoughts that ended as a giant “Uhhhhh”…I didn’t know, I just did NOT know where I got my edge from, what deep down inside I wanted out of life or career. Did I have an idea? Sure, like most of us, I had tons of ideas, all rose-colored, obscure, foggy, generic perceptions of myself and the world around me. World peace, financial freedom, success, those kinds of general ideas that ignites a 30 second fire inside that dies down just as fast as it came up.
WHO ARE YOU? Where and what is your purpose? Are you the Connector who likes to bring people together and plan things? Are you the bargain-hunter who can stretch a buck? Are you the unorganized one who’s always running late and forgets the kids inside the house (hmmm, somewhat familiar)? Are you Miss Chatty Cathy, or would you rather listen?
Because if you can stretch a buck and feed your family on a budget, you can save your company money. If you like to listen, you may snatch information that no one did to create your own business. Come on over, Miss Chatty Cathy, you just made friends with your next business partner! Hello, Miss Fashionista, if the lady CFO is asking you about these $ 29.99 pumps from TJ Maxx, it may be your cue to fish for this promotion you’ve been looking for.
Are you a Coke, a Pepsi or a bland generic brand? Girl, are you a red hot Louboutin, or a Payless shoe (no offense, I’m a big Payless customer)? What’s your brand, what’s your caliber? I’m saying, like my daugher asks me, “What you got, Mommy?”
WHO ARE YOU? It’s not a kindergarten exercise, it truly is grown-up folk stuff. The kind of question we all need to wake up in the morning asking ourselves, drive to work asking ourselves, dress our children asking ourselves, until it becomes second nature, until you can see YOU and all the endless possibilities that come with YOU. Until you can challenge yourself more than your worst bad hair day can. Until the answers to this question drive you to your ultimate purpose in life…
I know I do…
