Senegalese Fashion: Meet Senegalese Stylist Diouma Dieng Diakhate
Happy Fashion Friday!
TGIF! This has been a loooong week on this side of the blogosphere, and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for the week-end…And today, I’m taking you on a bloggy fashion excursion to my home country of Senegal, the land of famous Senegalese hospitality “teranga” and of the most beautiful and fashionable African women (ok, I may be a bit biased). Ask anyone in Africa, and they will tell you that if there’s one thing Senegalese women can do, is dress, and when I say dress, I mean “D-R-E-S-S”!
And that’s where famed Senegalese fashion stylist Diouma Dieng Diakhate comes into play…Born in 1947 in Rufisque, Senegal, Ms. Diakhate was born in a very modest family, and learnt from the ripe age of 7 years old to fend for herself. Already at this age, used to help her mother sell vegetables at the local market. And already at this age, she was passionate of fashion, sewing dresses and outfits for her handmade dolls. She later dropped out of high school, unable to continue her schooling…And without any formal training, she will go on later to create her own fashion line, called “Shalimar Couture”, and went on to dress most of the African First Ladies. Ms. Diakhate is also a generous philanthropist, who invested her own resources into building maternity wards, morgues and mosques in Senegal. She recently published her autobiography entitled “Diouma Dieng Diakhate: les secrets d’une reussite”, in English “Diouma DIeng Diakhate: Secrets of Success”. Ms. Diakhate was recently running for the highest office in Senegal, yes, for this self-made woman, sky is the limit…
