Global Style: The Hijab Style
Happy Fashion Friday!
TGIF, it’s been a long and rather cold week on this side of the blogosphere…But it’s Friday, the sun is out, and spring is on the way (or so we hope)…just in time to celebrate a more global side of fashion and style that many of us may not be familiar with, or may even have some preconceptions about…The traditionally conservative Muslim head covering, the hijab, aside from the religious and societal debate sometimes associated with it, has recently introduced a style revolution, filled with vibrant originality and unique creativity.
I was so thrilled to read on the “women’s blog” about how Iranian-born photograher Sara Shamsavari was able to capture on camera this incredible variety of colors, styles and fashions on the streets of London. Among the styles exhibited, are incredibly original hijabs with “leopard-print with attitudes, covered in flowers of bows, or sleek back gold chains.” Beyond the religious debate, and the negativity surrounding the many clichés and stereotypes around hijab-wearers, it is so refreshing and inspiring to see that beauty and style, do indeed come in a universal array of shapes, colors and styles.
