Ghanaian-born Designer Mimi Plange Makes Versatile Fashion
Happy Fashion Friday, and TGIF!
Today on our global fashion tour, I would like to tilt my hat up to an amazing designer of African descent that I’ve been reading about more and more in the media, and who is making some versatile, inspired fashion with a definite edge…Her name is Mimi Plange, she was born in Ghana, raised in Southern California, and is the creative director of her own eponymous fashion brand Mimi Plange.
It all started in 2009 for Ms. Plange, when she started her luxury ready-to-wear line…And what an original and versatile line, as it displays the modern traditionalism of American sportswear inspired by African historical fashion and…Victorian fashion. Now who would’ve thought of reuniting these 2 fashion concepts under one unique, versatile fashion house? Well, Mimi Plange surely has, and she’s doing it so well, that since the launch of her line, she’s been featured in major publications such as the New York Times, the oh-so-sacred fashion mecca Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, to cite a few. And among the celebrities who’ve been seen sporting her designs, my personal favorite, First Lady Michelle Obama, singer Janelle Monae, Rihanna, Regina King, Estelle, and so many more….
I particularly enjoyed her more recent Spring/summer 2013 collection, entitled “Tea with Mother”, featuring pale florals, sophisticated, classy designs showcasing the elegance of a longer hemline, the subtle sexiness of embroidery, and the suave appeal of fluid materials on the female body. And even more than her collection, I absolutely loved the 34-year old designer’s words as she spoke of her vision of feminity and fashion, as reported by Examiner.com: ” There is a way to look young, but still look like a woman. I’m inspired by real women, who are put together. I like to see a woman looking grand.” Well said, Ms. Plange…
Her designs are sold in North America, Belgium, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for now.
Without further ado, I give you a taste of Mimi Plange’s designs:
